Our story
Hi! I'm Julie, the owner and founder of The Maker Barn Studio.
This studio started with a simple need: I wanted better tack for my own horses than what I could find locally. What began with custom halters and leads quickly grew into something broader: offering not only finished horse and dog gear but also the materials and instruction to make it yourself.
I’m still the one riding, training, and testing things, and the studio is small-batch on purpose. It’s also a place to learn, with tutorials, DIY kits, and maker supplies for riders and dog owners who like understanding how their gear is put together and want the option to build their own.
If you’re not sure what you need, I’m always happy to help you choose materials, sizing, or the right kit before you order.

Can I cancel my order?
Custom orders
Once a custom order has entered production, it cannot be cancelled, as materials and labour are committed specifically to your build.
If a custom order has not yet begun, cancellation may be possible. Any refund issued will be minus applicable transaction or processing fees. Please contact us as soon as possible to check the status of your order.
Pre-made items & maker supplies
Orders that have not yet shipped may be cancelled. Once shipped, returns fall under our return policy.
What is your return policy?
We accept returns on eligible pre-made items and maker supplies within 14 days of delivery, provided items are unused and in original condition.
Custom items are final sale and are not eligible for return or exchange. Full details can be found on our Returns & Craftsmanship Guarantee page.
What if there’s an issue with workmanship?
All finished gear—both pre-made and custom—is covered by our craftsmanship guarantee.
If you believe there is a defect related to construction or materials, please contact us within 14 days of delivery. We will review the issue and offer repair, replacement, or resolution as appropriate.
Normal wear, improper use, incorrect sizing selections, or damage from use outside the item’s intended purpose are not covered.
What about broken snaps or hardware?
Metal snaps and hardware are designed to meet specific load limits. Horses and dogs can place unexpected stress on equipment through pulling, stepping on gear, or entanglement.
Hardware failure is sometimes a safety feature rather than a defect. Because of this, we are unable to offer free replacement of broken snaps or hardware due to use.
If hardware becomes stiff or sticky, cleaning with warm water and a small drop of oil often resolves the issue. If not, we’re happy to discuss repair or replacement options.
How durable are your rope and paracord products?
The materials we use are selected for strength and durability, but no textile product is indestructible.
Regular cleaning, proper storage, and avoiding prolonged UV exposure will extend the life of your gear. With appropriate care and use, our products are built to perform reliably under normal working conditions.
Still have questions?
If you’re unsure about sizing, materials, or which option is right for your needs, we’re always happy to help before you place an order. Thoughtful use starts with informed choices.
